Spiced up medicine

A peppery thematic tour!

Few subjects are as suitable as “Herbs and Spices” to bridge the history gap between the healing and cooking arts. Due to their exotic origins, spice drugs were some of the most expensive and sought-after trade goods.

They have belonged in the pharmacy and the kitchen since the Middle Ages onwards and nowadays it is impossible to imagine our world without them. Their striking colours and the fragrance of aetheric oils made spices simultaneously an ingredient and a precious remedy.

What role did spices play in staying healthy? What did the Prince-Electors of Heidelberg think of a ‘healthy’ diet? Come and discover interesting and amazing facts about the Renaissance cuisine – from cooked deer ears to stuffed stock fish tail.

It will be our pleasure to introduce you to the “spicy” era of Heidelberg Renaissance, including authentic recipes out of pharmacopoeia and cook books from the 16th and 17th centuries, and to spices you can smell as well as taste!
