Apothecary Garden

Blooms and Scents of Historical Medicine

June 2019 saw the opening of the historical apothecary garden of the German Pharmacy Museum at the Heidelberg Castle. You can view the garden as part of various guided tours.

The “Hortus Medicus”, a garden with officinal plants, famous beyond palatinate borders, had existed at the Heidelberg Castle already in the 16th century. Its caretaker was Philipp Stefan Sprenger (ca. 1536–1608), court apothecary of the Prince-Electors in Heidelberg.

The apothecary garden of today was planted in accordance with historical botanical compendiums, first and foremost following Sprenger’s catalogue. Thus, our garden boasts many of the plants that could be found in Heidelberg’s “Hortus Medicus” 400 years ago.

Although the garden is not very large, it offers excellent insights into the past knowledge and use of various officinal plants. In addition to that, you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the Neckar valley!

The garden is in a part of the castle complex that is not publicly accessible. In order to view it, please book one of the guided tours offered by the German Pharmacy Museum, either via phone (0049 6221-25880) or per e-mail (info@deutsches-apotheken-museum.de).

Bookings can be made at any time, however the guided tours of the apothecary garden are only available between May and October due to seasonal adjustment.
